We
keep a herd of 15 breeding cows. They are breed to a type, with a frame score
between four and five, quite temperament, milky, with sound feet, and good
confirmation. In short all the best points of the breed. Our stock bull Sence
Valley Hengest is the son of Show Champion Ashrose Hercules (see photo to the
right of Hengest as
a calf). He is frame score six with good feet and good thick confirmation The
cattle are based on blood lines from Earnshaw, Romany and Leighon herds. We
usually have in calf heifers and some bulls for sale. Our steer are sold direct
to our beef customers butchered into handy packs.
We manage our land with no sprays or Nitrogen, but the field are managed for a high proportion of clover in the sward. The cattle are only fed grass and hay and the weaned calves are given one kilo of coarse ration in their first winter. Very low input stock management.
All the stock are Breedplan recorded, the results can be seen on the Breedplan page by following the links and then typing in Sence Valley in the top box (Name), this will bring up all the stock recorded and their pedigrees. We have also GeneSTAR tested a number of animals especially our stock Bulls. Starting with Sence Valley Chieftain his son Fred and his grandson Ivan. All of them have come out 1 Star for Marbling and 4 Star for tenderness, in fact Chieftain has come out 8 Star for tenderness because he was tested last and the number of genes has been increased. We will now be able to improve our stock and sell them with performance figures, that will help purchasers make more informed decisions.
